Where these items come from
The General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR, Regulation (EU) 2023/988) applies to consumer products placed on the EU market from 13 December 2024. For distance sales — which includes a normal online store reachable by EU consumers — Art. 19 lists the information the offer itself must "clearly and visibly" indicate: the manufacturer's identity and addresses, an EU responsible person when the manufacturer is established outside the EU, information identifying the product including a picture, and applicable warnings or safety information in a language the targeted consumers easily understand.
The responsible-person duty comes from Art. 16: a product may only be placed on the EU market if there is an economic operator established in the EU who holds the technical documentation and can answer to market-surveillance authorities.
Doing this on Shopify
The pattern that scales: keep the data as structured metafields on each product (manufacturer, responsible person, warnings), render them with a theme block or Liquid snippet on the product template, and show an honest "not provided" state instead of hiding the section — so you can see at a glance which products still miss data. Keep manufacturers and responsible persons as reusable records you link per product; retyping them per product doesn't survive a real catalog.
Our free GPSR app for Shopify stores manufacturers and EU responsible persons as reusable records, shows exactly which products are missing which fields, and renders the information on your product pages in each EU language through a theme block. Read the guide or see the full PriceProof suite.
FAQ
Does GPSR apply to my store if I'm not in the EU?
It applies to products offered to EU consumers, wherever the seller sits. If you ship to the EU, your listings are in scope — and a manufacturer outside the EU is exactly the case where an EU responsible person must be named.
Who can be the EU responsible person?
Art. 16 allows a manufacturer established in the EU, an importer, an authorised representative with a written mandate, or an EU fulfilment service provider. Many non-EU brands appoint a commercial authorised-representative service.
Do I need this on every product page?
The information duty attaches to each offer of a product covered by GPSR — in practice that means each product page for physical consumer goods. Categories with their own sectoral regimes (food, medicines, medical devices, and others) follow their own rules.
Is a QR code or a link enough?
Art. 19 asks for the information to be clear and visible in the offer itself. Enforcement practice is still forming; putting the actual text on the page is the conservative reading, and it's what marketplaces have been asking sellers for.
What happens if the information is missing?
Market-surveillance authorities can require corrections, restrict or ban sales, and marketplaces increasingly delist offers that lack the data. The checklist above is the cheap way to find gaps before someone else does.
Is anything I tick here uploaded?
No. The page has no server calls, no analytics and no storage — ticks vanish when you close the tab.
